My name is Manuela, and I’m the old lady around here. When they took me here, they reckoned I’d kick the bucket soon, but I proved them wrong! I like it here, and I still enjoy life. I don’t get worked up so much anymore, and I go around minding my own business. I usually find a nice place and curl up there. I love it when we have visitors. I always go up close to try and get a pet on my head. Life is good now – they give me a big bowl of food every day, just for me, and there is always someone who will hug me. It’s a lot better compared with the old days, when I had to scrape together my meal every day and got shooed away every time.
My name is James, and I’m almost 3 years old now. When they brought me here, I suddenly found myself on a leash, attached to Gerbien. That was a little odd. I had to go with her everywhere she went. We used to walk in the garden and pass by all the other dogs. It helped me to be a little less frightened. I also like it here in the shelter, but I do get scared when there’s a lot of noise and when the big dogs growl. But there are great spots to lie down everywhere, and I always get a good bowl of food. I am a little less frightened every day, and people tell me I might be allowed to travel to a great home one day, just like my brother Dean.
In our shelter
Dogs like Manuela and James are also welcome in our shelter. Manuela will stay with us due to her age and her vulnerable condition. She was operated to remove tumors, and she still has tumors now. We are keeping a close watch on her to make sure she is happy. James is very anxious due to a trauma he suffered when he was a puppy. Someone once put him outside the fence of a dog shelter, after which he ended up in a big dog’s mouth. Close monitoring helps him progress little by little every day. At first he could not be approached, so we put him on a leash attached to Gerbien as a training method. We expect him to be re-homed at some point.
